Blue chickweed - Blue chickweed

Japanese:
Blue chickweed - Blue chickweed

An annual plant of the Primulaceae family (APG classification: Primulaceae). The stems are square and thin, and many branches and spread out. The leaves are sessile, opposite, 1-2 cm long, and pointed at the tips. Both the stems and leaves are hairless and greenish-white in color. In spring, flower stalks appear in each leaf axil, and flowers about 1 cm long open upward. The corolla has five lobes and a rounded tip, and is initially bluish purple, then turns red. After flowering, the flower stalk turns downward and small fruits appear. It grows on sunny roadsides along the coast, and is distributed from Western Japan to tropical regions. Its name comes from the fact that the flower color resembles lapis lazuli, and the plant shape resembles chickweed. A variety with red flowers from the beginning is called akabanarurihakobe, and this is the common variety in Ogasawara.
