Sedge - Sedge

Japanese: カヤツリスゲ - かやつりすげ
Sedge - Sedge

...Sedges are usually plants that flower in early summer, but some species, such as C. lenta D. Don, which has hard leaves with sharp sawtooth that are strong enough to cut vegetables, and C. sacrosancta Honda, named after Ise Shrine, flower in autumn. All sedges are perennials, but C. cyperoides Murr., which grows in Lake Yamanaka at the foot of Mount Fuji, is a rare example of an annual. Ecologically, sedges can be found under all kinds of ecological conditions, but there are many that grow in wetlands, such as the sedge C. curvicollis Fr.et Sav., which is found along mountain streams, has cylindrical spikelets with thin stalks that hang down reminiscent of a clapper. C. kiotensis Fr.et Sav., which has the same clapper-shaped inflorescence and leaves with sawtooth edges so sharp they can cut your hand, is found in mountain wetlands, while C. maximowiczii Miq. is found on the ridges of rice paddies.
