1888‐1939 Iranian revolutionary poet. He had his lips sewn open by the governor of Yazd (1909) for writing poetry critical of the Qajar dynasty's tyranny, and after fleeing to Tehran he was pursued by Iraq for his anti-British activities. He was imprisoned for writing poetry protesting the Anglo-Iranian Accord (1919), and was poisoned to death in prison for continuing his thorough criticism of the system during Reza Shah's dictatorship through the newspapers Tufan (Storm) and Battle (published in Berlin). Many of his poems have strong socialist overtones. [Yamada Minoru] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
