Kalan

...In Champa, where Hinduism was more prevalent than Buddhism, architecture and sculpture had already perfected a style similar to the Gupta style of India and pre-Angkor art of the Khmer by the 7th century. In particular, stone architecture with a pyramidal upper story on a square tower called a kalan developed early on, and by the 10th century this distinctive style had been perfected. The ruins of My Son and its eastwards neighbors such as Cha Kieu and Dong Duong tell us the history of Champa architecture, which did not develop stepped pyramids or gallery-style structures like the Khmer, but gradually abandoned Indian elements and began to express ethnic characteristics.
