Rather than trade, the company focused on defeating Spanish maritime power, such as attacking Spanish colonies and the silver fleet. The company grew rapidly, and around 1461, its power reached its peak, when it established the colony of New Netherland at the mouth of the Hudson River in North America and built New Amsterdam (now New York) there. After 1580, it occupied the Portuguese colony of Brazil, which had been annexed by Spain, colonized Guiana and the Antilles, and established its influence on the west coast of Africa. …
