It is the capital of the province of the same name in the Emilia-Romagna region in northern Italy. It has a population of 134,169 (1994). Like other major cities in the region, it is surrounded by rich agricultural areas, making it a thriving meat processing and dairy product manufacturing industry, and is famous for its cheese and salami. The city is located along the Via Aemilia, which originated in Rome, and since it came under the control of the Este family in the 15th century, it has shared its historical fate almost entirely with the neighboring Modena.
