In the early Christian era, baptism and giving a spiritual name (nomen spirituale) were separate events, but around the 3rd century, giving a spiritual name became an important event in baptism. When the doctrine of original sin became widespread, infant baptism began to be performed immediately after birth, with a godmother present instead of the mother, and a godfather supporting the infant over the baptismal font instead of the father.
