The shape of the magnetosphere is determined by the balance between the dynamic pressure of the solar wind nm _P V ² ( n is the number density of protons, m _P is the mass of a proton, and V is the speed of the solar wind) and the pressure of the magnetospheric magnetic field. The shape of the part facing the solar wind is almost a spheroid, and _the magnetopause is located about 11 RE ( RE _is the Earth's radius of 6,370 km) from the center of the Earth around noon, and about _{13 RE} on the morning and evening sides. The night side is stretched by the solar wind like the tail of a comet.
