 16世紀半ば以降,帆と櫓櫂(ろかい)の木造ガレー船に代わり帆走主体の木造ガレオン船が出現した。1588年ガレオン船同士の艦隊決戦で,砲戦を主戦法としたイギリスが衝角と切込み中心の接近戦を主戦法としたスペインに勝ったことが戦列艦ships of the lineを生む端緒となった。戦列艦とは戦列を構成し,相手とある距離を保ち一斉射撃をする艦をいい,この中の大型艦が戦艦に相当する。…
