A gagaku musician from the early Heian period. He is said to be the founder of flutes and dance. He worked with Oto Kiyokami to reform the musical system of the Heian period, revising the dance "Ryo-o" at the command of Emperor Kōken, and composing the dances "Otenraku," "Jusui-raku," and "Kanan-pu" for the enthronement ceremony of Emperor Ninmyo (834). He traveled to China as a Japanese envoy for four years from 835 (Jowa 2). In 845, at the age of 113, he danced his own composition "Wafu Ucho Juraku" (one theory is "Spring Nightingale Song") like a boy, admiring an audience of 1,000 people from the Keishokai, and dedicated a song to him: "I present to you the dance of more than 100 old men who have lived through seven generations of reigns." He also wrote the music book "Gojuki" (772). [Yoko Hashimoto] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
