…The founding announcement proclaimed the paper to be a “recorder of the times.” On January 1, 1888, the title was changed to “The Times or Daily Universal Register,” and in March, it became “The Times.” The Walter family, who had become devoted to newspaper management, appointed Thomas Barnes, a friend of L. Hunt and C. Lamb, who had radical ideas, as editor in 1817, and worked to shape the so-called middle-class public opinion by reforming the electoral law, while at the same time expanding the news gathering network by appointing correspondents and correspondents, and promoting modernization by introducing a steam-powered mechanical printing press. …
