Year of death: August 8, 1549 (August 30, 1549) Year of birth: Bunmei 5 (1473) A Renga and Haikai writer from the Muromachi period. A Shinto priest at the Inner Shrine of Ise. His father was Arakida Morihide and his mother was the daughter of Fujinami Ujitsune. He became a Negi (primary priest) at the age of 15 and progressed through the ranks until he reached the position of Chief Priest in Tenbun 10 (1541) at the age of 69. He loved Renga from a young age, and in 1495 (Meio 4) at the age of 23, he and his brother Moriaki included one poem in the Shinsen [G7EDFKunami/Tsukuba] Collection selected by Iio Sogi. His Renga works include Horaku Hokkushu and Akitsushima Senku. In his old age, he became enthusiastic about the then newly emerging art of haiku, and in Tenbun 9 (1540), at the age of 68, he composed "Moritake Senku (Haiku Renga Solo Recitation Senku)," completing the Senku format for the first time in haiku, which had previously only been utterances (verses not formally written down). His style avoided the vulgar humor of "Inu Tsukubashu," and linked associations through the bonds of words, resulting in gentle verses such as "The thin flowers on the side of the road where my groom entered the house, the autumn wind blows, holding a tokuri." He also wrote the moral poem "Yonchu Hyakushu" and the collection of short stories "Moritake Zuihitsu." <References> "Arakida Moritake Shu," edited by the Jingu Shicho, and "Arakida Moritake" by Ito Masao (Meiji Shoin "Haiku Lectures," Vol. 2) (Taizo Sawai) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
