Popular Words - Ryukogo

Also called "trendy words." Words that rapidly come into use, with a strong, influential meaning, in keeping with the interests and concerns of people at the time. Many disappear within a short time, but some remain in use for a long time and are incorporated into the general vocabulary. With the development of mass media, the rise and fall of buzzwords has become even more dizzying.

The types of words are also diverse, including Chinese words (third-class executive, eight-body body, etc.), Japanese words (kaidashi, hanging, etc.), foreign words (king size, que sera sera, etc.), and hybrid words (reverse course, corporate racketeer, etc.). Some also form phrases, such as "old man's love" and "I'll write it." Because of their strong inspiring meaning, many of them are onomatopoeic. For example, ordinary phrases can be made into catchphrases by pronouncing them with a unique accent or intonation. Furthermore, previously used phrases are sometimes brought into the spotlight and made popular. The phrase "since Jinmu," which was popular in the 1950s, can already be seen in the works of Saikaku. On the other hand, there are also newly created phrases, such as "bancho," "futei shousou," and "~ syndrome." In these cases, some words are invented or have a clear origin, such as "yoromeki" (a Japanese word meaning "stupid") or "taiyo-zoku" (a Japanese word meaning sun-shine), while others, such as "ikasu" (a Japanese word meaning "cool") or "naui" (a Japanese word meaning "nowadays"), began to be used without anybody noticing. Popular words reflect social interests, so their transitions can reveal the social conditions of each period.

「はやりことば」ともいう。その時々の人々の興味や関心に適合して、強い感化的な意味をもって、急激に使用されるようになる語。多くは短期間に消滅するが、長く使われて一般の語彙(ごい)に取り込まれることもある。マスコミの発達とともに、流行語の消長もいっそうめまぐるしくなってきている。

　語種もさまざまで、漢語（三等重役、八等身など）、和語（買出し、つるし上げなど）、外来語（キングサイズ、ケセラセラなど）、混種語（逆コース、総会屋など）などがある。また、「老いらくの恋」「書きますわよ」のように句をなしているものもみられる。感化的な意味合いが強いことから、擬声語的なものも多い。たとえば、ごく普通の語句を特異なアクセントやイントネーションで発音して流行語化することもある。さらに、従来使われていた語句にスポットがあてられ、もてはやされもする。昭和30年代にはやった「神武(じんむ)以来」という語は、すでに西鶴(さいかく)の作品にみられるといったぐあいである。一方、「番長」「不定愁訴」「～症候群」などのように、新しくつくられた語句もある。その場合、「よろめき」や「太陽族」のように、つくりだしたものや出所の明らかなものもあるが、「いかす」「ナウい」のように、だれからともなく使われ出したものもある。流行語には社会の関心が現れているので、その変遷から各時期の世相がうかがえる。
