The account book of a Turk-Mongolian nomadic monarch. It was also called the Horda. Specifically, it refers to the entire set of a monarch's assets, including women, children, livestock, and all other movable property attached to the account book. By extension, it is also used to mean the imperial court, headquarters, or harem. Its original meaning is said to mean "center," and it appeared in Chinese documents from the Liao dynasty, where it was translated into Chinese as "temple palace" or "book of a monarch." As the monarch's power strengthened, the organization and size of the book were improved. Genghis Khan's Four Great Ordos were the most prominent examples, and were symbols of the growing power of the monarchy. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
