Old English sheepdog (species)

A sheepdog (illustration) originating from England. A medium-sized breed, standing at least 55 cm tall and weighing 25-27 kg. This dog is characterized by a thick, dense undercoat and a stiff but extremely long topcoat, with only the tip of the nose and the tongue visible when the mouth is open. The coat color is white on the head, neck, chest, and extremities, while the body is gray or a bluish gray called grizzle. The tail is customarily cut short, leading to the nickname "bobtail." This dog is not as old as the name of the breed would suggest, and is a relatively new breed, having been bred in the early 1800s.

原産地がイギリスの牧羊犬（イラスト）。体高55cm以上，体重25～27kgの中型種。このイヌの特徴は，厚く密な下毛と，硬いが著しく長い上毛で全身が包まれ，顔は鼻先と口を開いたときの舌しか見えないところにある。毛色は頭頸部と胸前と四肢端は白く，体部はグレーまたはグリズルgrizzleと呼ばれる青みがかったグレーである。尾は短く切る習慣があり，“ボブテイルbobtail”のあだ名で呼ばれる。このイヌは犬種名が示すほど古くはなく，1800年代の初期に育種された比較的歴史の浅いイヌである。
