A general term for insects in the family Buprestidae in the order Coleoptera, or one of these species. The jewel beetle, Chrysochroa fulgidissima , is the largest of the species native to Japan, reaching a body length of 4 cm. It is also known as the Yamato jewel beetle. Its green body has broad copper-purple vertical stripes on its back and a beautiful metallic sheen. Its English name is two-striped green buprestid. It is found in Honshu (except for northern Honshu), Shikoku, and Kyushu, as well as the Korean Peninsula and Taiwan. Adults appear in large numbers from July to August, and fly actively during the day.
