Epilobium angustifolium, great willow herb

Japanese: ヤナギラン(柳蘭) - ヤナギラン(英語表記)Epilobium angustifolium; great willow herb
Epilobium angustifolium, great willow herb
A perennial plant of the Onagraceae family, also known as willow grass. It is widely distributed in the cool temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere. In Japan, it grows in clusters in sunny places such as grasslands on the plateaus of Hokkaido and the Chubu region and north. It particularly invades areas where vegetation has been destroyed, such as clearcuts and forest fires. The stems are unbranched and stand upright at a height of 1 to 1.5 meters. The leaves are alternate and lanceolate, somewhat large, and resemble willow leaves in both shape and texture. The underside is powdery white with very small sawtooth edges. In July and August, the racemes form a terminal inflorescence, and many beautiful red-purple flowers bloom. There are four sepals and petals, and eight long stamens. The ovary below the flower is linear and long, and when it ripens after flowering, it becomes a capsule. The seeds have long white hairs at the end.
