The Three Calligraphy Works of the Kan'ei Era

…In 1601, he returned to his post as Minister of the Left, and in 1605, he became the Chancellor and the head of the clan. He was known as a skilled calligrapher, and in later generations, his style was called the Sanmyakuin style, and he was praised as one of the Three Great Calligraphers of the Kan'ei Period, along with Hon'ami Koetsu and Shokado Shojo. ...Other monks from the Obaku sect who came to Japan during the Edo period, Ingen, Mokuan (1611-84), and Sokuhi (1616-71, given the name Nyoichi and a disciple of Mokuan), are called the "Three Calligraphers of Obaku," while Konoe Nobutada (pen name Sanmyakuin), Hon'ami Koetsu, and Shokado Shōjō are called the "Three Calligraphers of the Kan'ei Period." This name probably came into use after the Meiji period, and in the 1730s (Kyoho era) the Kan'ei Three Calligraphers were called the "Three Calligraphers of Kyoto." Makiryōkō, Ichikawa Beian, and Nukina Kaiya (Sōō) were also called the "Three Calligraphers of the Late Edo Period."

…Prince Fushimi Soncho is known for his excellent calligraphy, especially the Soncho style, even within the Shoren-in school. Among the nobles was Konoe Sakihisa, who founded the Konoe school from the Shoren-in school. His son Konoe Nobutada, in particular, produced a unique style of calligraphy in large characters using strong brushstrokes, which came to be known as the Sanmyakuin school. Together with Hon'ami Koetsu and Shokado Shojo from the early Edo period, he is called one of the "Three Calligraphers of the Kan'ei Era." His large-character folding screens are powerful works of Japanese-style calligraphy that rival the sliding screen paintings that were popular at the time. …

From [Honami Koetsu]

…His representative works include Fujiyama, Shigure, Amegumo, Kichigai, Shichiri, Kaga, Bishamon-do, Otogozen, Kamiya, and Setsubun. If he were forced to classify them, he would divide them into semi-cylindrical works with a bulging waist and works with a rounded waist. [Taka Akanuma] He was initially influenced by the Shoren-in Soncho school and the Konoe school, but he learned directly from the ancient style and eventually created his own style of calligraphy, the Koetsu style, which is rich in variation in thickness and volume, and is famous as one of the three calligraphy styles of the Kan'ei period, along with Konoe Nobutada and Shokado Shojo. His works are full of decorative beauty that harmonize with the paper with gold and silver underpaintings, and his main works include the Woodblock Waka Scroll, the Four Seasons Flowers Waka Scroll, and Rissho Ankoku Ron. …
