Walter Bagehot

Japanese: バジョット - ばじょっと(英語表記)Walter Bagehot
Walter Bagehot

British economist, political scientist, and journalist. Born in Langport, Somerset, as the son of a banker, he graduated from University College, London, and worked in his family's banking business while also writing critical essays. In 1855, he founded the National Review, and was mainly involved in literary criticism. In 1858, he married the eldest daughter of James Wilson, founder of The Economist. Two years later, after the sudden death of his father-in-law, he became the manager and then editor of The Economist, and wrote vivid critical essays covering a wide range of fields, including politics, economics, culture, history, and personal evaluation. His works include The Structure of the English State (1867), which vividly describes British parliamentary politics, and Natural and Political Science (1872), which is considered a pioneering work in political psychology, and are classics in the history of political thought. His Lombard Street (1873), which discusses the role of the Bank of England, is an essential work for discussing the history of 19th-century finance.
