Volta's law

This law relates to the contact potential difference between dissimilar conductors. When multiple conductors at the same temperature are connected in series, the potential difference between the two ends is equal to the potential difference when the two conductors are in direct contact. If this law holds true, then even if the two ends of a conductor are connected to form a closed circuit, no current will flow due to the contact potential difference alone. This law holds true for the contact potential difference between metals, but not for the contact potential difference between a metal and an electrolyte solution.

異種の導体の間に生じる接触電位差に関する法則で，同じ温度にある多数の導体を直列に連結したときの両端の導体の間の電位差は，両導体を直接に接触させたときの電位差に等しい。この法則が成り立てば，両端の導体を連結して閉回路をつくっても，接触電位差だけでは電流が流れない。この法則は金属間の接触電位差に対しては成り立つが，金属と電解質溶液との間の接触電位差に対しては成り立たない。
