1490‐1557 Swedish Catholic Archbishop and cultural historian. In 1527, he left the country in opposition to the introduction of the Reformation, but later returned and was appointed Archbishop of Uppsala in 1544. His work, History of the Nordic Peoples (1555), gives a good account of the ethnological situation in Scandinavia in the 16th century, and together with his map of Scandinavia, Carta marina (1539), it remains a valuable historical resource that has been passed down to the present day.
