…Photochemical smog is a phenomenon in which photochemical oxidants are generated in the atmosphere, and the concentration of photochemical oxidants on the earth's surface increases due to weather conditions such as the formation of an inversion layer, weak winds, moderately strong sunlight, and high temperatures. Photochemical oxidants are a collective name for atmospheric substances that have a stronger oxidizing power than oxygen and oxidize potassium iodide in a neutral potassium iodide solution to liberate iodine. Most of these are ozone O3 , with trace amounts of peroxides such as peroxyacetylnitrate (PAN) and peroxybenzoylnitrate (PBzN). Ozone is released when nitrogen monoxide (NO) or nitrogen dioxide ( NO2 ) (collectively referred to as NOx ) undergoes a complex photochemical reaction with hydrocarbons. …
