The main seaport in northern Norway. Capital of Tromsø County. Founded in 1250, it was granted city rights in 1794. Famous as the gateway to the Arctic Ocean since ancient times. It was briefly the seat of the Norwegian government during World War II. Today, it is an important base for Arctic crab fishing and a navigation base to Svalbard. It has a shipyard and exports fish, marine products, and furs.
