The first English language newspaper in Japan was founded on June 22, 1861 (Bunkyu 1) by A.W. Hansard, a British trader living in Nagasaki. It was published twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with its last issue being the 28th on October 1 of the same year. It was founded six months before the first Japanese language newspaper in Japan, the Official Batavia Newspaper. In addition to general news, the paper had a well-organized layout that included foreign exchange rates, ship arrival and departure information, and advertisements. The Japan Herald, a weekly newspaper that Hansard published in Yokohama on November 23 of the same year, was its successor. It continued to be published after Hansard's death in 1867, and ceased publication in 1914. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
