A government office in charge of registration procedures. However, there is no government office with the actual name of a registry office, and instead, the Ministry of Justice's subordinate organizations, the Legal Affairs Bureau or the Regional Legal Affairs Bureau, or their branches or sub-offices, are responsible for registry affairs (Real Estate Registration Act, Article 6, Paragraph 1; Commercial Registration Act, Article 1, Paragraph 3). For specific registration affairs, a registry office is designated to actually handle the affairs, and this is the competent registry office. The jurisdiction of each registry office is determined based on administrative districts, and for real estate registration, the location of the real estate is the basis for jurisdiction, and for commercial registration, the location of the business office of the parties is the basis for jurisdiction (Real Estate Registration Act, Article 6, Paragraph 1; Commercial Registration Act, Article 1, Paragraph 3).

登記の手続きを担当する役所。ただし，登記所という現実の名称をもつ役所はなく，法務省の下部機構としての法務局もしくは地方法務局またはそれらの支局，出張所が登記所としての登記事務を司る（不動産登記法6条1項，商業登記法1条の3）。具体的な登記事務については，現実に事務を取り扱うべき登記所が決まっており，それが管轄登記所である。各登記所の管轄区域は行政区画を基準にして定められており，不動産登記については不動産の所在地，商業登記については当事者の営業所の所在地が管轄の基準となる（不動産登記法6条1項，商業登記法1条の3）。
