It is the capital of La Libertad department in northern Peru. It is located in the coastal desert along the Pacific coast, about 500 km north-northwest of the capital Lima. It is the second oldest city in Peru built by the Spaniards after Piura in the north, having been founded in 1534. Since a large sugarcane plantation was established with foreign capital around the 19th century, the population has rapidly increased and it is now one of the country's major cities. In the irrigated agricultural area of the surrounding Moche River valley, sugarcane and rice are cultivated thriving, and the city collects and processes these agricultural products, as well as manufacturing various foods, beer, leather, textiles, soap, etc. The city was severely damaged in the 1612 earthquake, but many old buildings, including the cathedral, have been preserved, and it retains the appearance of the colonial era. In the southeastern suburbs are the ruins of Chan Chan, the capital of the Chimu Kingdom, which flourished in the pre-Inca period, and the National University of Trujillo (1824) in the city has a collection of pottery belonging to Andean civilizations such as the Chimu and Mochica. The Pan-American Highway passes through the city, and a road leading into the Andes branches off here. Population: 532,000 (1990 estimate).

It is a port city on the Caribbean Sea, located about 250 km north-northeast of the capital Tegucigalpa, on the southern shore of Trujillo Bay. Founded in 1525, it was the first capital of the Spanish colony of Honduras, and flourished especially in the early 17th century. It was occupied by Dutch pirates in 1643 and then fell into ruin. In 1787, the Spanish settled there and rebuilt the town. It is now a commercial center, distributing bananas, coconuts, mahogany wood, leather, and other products. Since 1920, port functions have been transferred to Puerto Castilla, which was built on the northern shore of the bay. Population: 5,547 (estimated 1988).

The capital of Trujillo State in northwestern Venezuela. It is located about 70 km east of the eastern shore of Lake Maracaibo, the country's largest lake, and in the northern part of the Mérida Mountains, at an altitude of about 800 m. It was built in 1556. During the colonial period, it prospered as a transit point for the transportation of goods. Today, it is the center of the surrounding fertile agricultural areas, distributing cacao, corn, coffee, sugar cane, tobacco, and fruit. There are factories in the city that process flour and fish. Population: 32,683 (1990 estimate).
