Pathogenic fungi that infect the human body are found in all taxonomic groups except for basidiomycetes, and diseases caused by infection with these pathogenic fungi are called mycoses. Generally, fungi are less pathogenic than other pathogenic microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses, and many fungi tend to become chronic after infection, but some, such as Cryptococcus neoformans and Histoplasma capsulatum , show acute, severe symptoms and have a high mortality rate. Mycoses are divided into endogenous mycoses, which occur when fungi that are normally present in healthy people become pathogenic for some reason (such infections are called opportunistic infections), and exogenous mycoses, which occur when fungi that are not normally present in healthy people infect the body due to a weakened resistance.
