In a broader sense, it refers to a sequence of tones that exists in a culture, whether or not it is used in a piece of music, such as the modern Western twelve-tone equal temperament or the Javanese pero sequence. It also refers to a sequence of tones that has a certain structure different from a scale or mode, such as the diatonic scale, which does not have a tonic note and related functions such as dominant and leading tones. When referring to a sequence in twelve-tone music or atonal music, it refers to a sequence of several or 12 different tones that form the basis of the musical structure of the piece, and a compositional method based on this sequence is called a sequence technique or a sequence technique. In this case, unlike a series, which consists of 12 different tones in one octave, a sequence does not necessarily need to have 12 tones.

広義には、たとえば西洋近代の十二平均律やジャワのペロ音列のように、ある楽曲に使用するしないにかかわらず、その文化内に存在する音の系列をいう。また、音階や旋法とは異なる一定の組織をもつ音の系列をもいい、たとえば全音音階のように主音とそれに関係する属音や導音といった諸機能をもたない音階は、全音音列ともよばれる。十二音音楽や無調音楽などで音列という場合は、その楽曲の楽曲構造の基礎となる互いに異なる数個ないし12個の音の順列をさし、この音列をもとにした作曲法を音列作法または音列技法とよぶ。この場合は、1オクターブ内の12個の異なる音によって成り立つセリーsérieとは異なり、音列はかならずしも12個の音を必要としない。
