A port city in the state of Carabobo in northern Venezuela. Population 128,825 (1990). Founded in the 1560s, it mainly exported cacao and sugar during the colonial period. Along with Cartagena, it is one of the important ports in the Caribbean and was often attacked by pirates. It grew in close connection with the agriculture, livestock and industry of the Valencia Basin behind it, and is now Venezuela's second largest port, with industries including shipbuilding, automobile assembly and petrochemicals.
