Petition of Right

…The gentry, common law experts, and Puritans united in Parliament to challenge the king and the court. Tensions rose even further during the reign of Charles I, who succeeded his father in 1625, and in 1628, the Third Parliament, led by Coke, submitted the Petition of Right to the king. It argued that the king's actions, such as compulsory donations, taxation without the consent of Parliament, illegal arrests and imprisonment, free lodging for soldiers, and the abuse of military trials, violated the rights and freedoms of the English people that had been guaranteed by common law, including the 13th century Magna Carta. …
