...Scholars who wrote about Japan without visiting it include the Renaissance French man of letters G. Postel, the Dutch missionary Arnoldus Montanus (1625-83), who wrote The Journal of the East India Company's Embassy in Japan (1669), and the aforementioned Charlevoix. JJ Hoffmann, who served as Siebold's assistant, became a professor at Leiden University in 1835, and published in Paris and Turin the Thousand Character Classic in 1840, a Dutch translation of Asano Takuzo's Wakan Nenkei in 1842, and a French translation of Uegaki Morikuni's Sericulture Secret Records in 1848.He also published Japanese Grammar in 1867, making great contributions to Japanese studies. However, like August Pfizmaier (1808-1887), who translated Ryutei Tanehiko's Ukiyo-gata Six-panel Screen in 1848, published Manyo Studies in 1872, and became a member of the Austrian Academy in 1878, he did not visit Japan. Even in France, where Sinology was established early on, Léon de Rosny (1837-1914), a student of the Sinologist S. Julien, moved into Japanese studies, and began teaching Japanese in 1863 at the École des Orientales in Paris. In 1868, this course became a regular professorship, and he continued to teach it until 1907, but he never visited Japan.
