[Died] May 29, 2010. Los Angeles, California. American actor, film director, and screenwriter. Full name Dennis Lee Hopper. His first directorial work, Easy Rider (1969), in which he played the lead role of Billy, made him a symbol of counterculture (→ American New Cinema). He was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay as a co-writer of the film. His debut as a film actor was Rebel Without a Cause (1955), in which he played a delinquent high school student. Despite his violent temper, he was cast in a series of films, including Giant (1956), but in 1958, Warner Brothers terminated his contract and he studied at the Actors Studio in New York. Due to his drug abuse and eccentricities, he was unable to get work at a major film company for about 10 years. After recovering from his addiction, he began working again in the film industry in the mid-1980s, receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Hoosiers (1986). Other films he has worked on include Speed ​​(1994) and Elegy (2008). He is also known as a photographer and painter, and a retrospective of his work was held at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 2001.

After 1915, he turned to etching and illustration, but from around 1930, he returned to watercolors and oil paintings. He maintained a realistic attitude, and preferred to paint city streets and buildings, and many of his works have a solitary atmosphere, with themes such as restaurants at night, deserted streets, and empty theaters. His major works include Early Sunday Morning (1930, Whitney Museum of American Art), Night Owls (1942, Art Institute of Chicago), and Seven A.M. (1948).
