Vedanta (English spelling)

…It is an extremely important document as a source of Indian thought. Because it corresponds to the final part of the four parts of the Brahmanic scriptures, the Vedas, it was also called Vedānta (the end of the Vedas), but this alternative name was later interpreted as the pinnacle of the Vedas. According to the common theory, the meaning of the word Upanishad is derived from the Sanskrit verb upa-ni-sad, meaning to sit nearby, and came to refer to the secret teachings that are transmitted from master to disciple while sitting opposite each other, and further to the documents that contain such secret teachings.
