An epistolary novel by French author Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Written between 1756 and 1758, and published in 1761, it went through many editions and became the biggest bestseller in 18th-century France. Julie, the daughter of an aristocrat, falls in love with her tutor, a commoner young man named Saint-Preux. Julie is torn between her love for her father, who is against her marriage due to the prejudice and pride of the aristocracy, and her love for her lover, but she eventually marries the man her father chose, Bolmar. Heartbroken, Saint-Preux sets off on a trip around the world with the help of an English aristocrat, Lord Bombard. When she returns to Europe a few years later, Bolmar, who knows the couple's past well, welcomes Saint-Preux into his home in order to settle the matter. It seems that she will overcome the passion that is trying to revive her, but when Julie dies in an accident, she swears eternal love to Saint-Preux before dying. The entire mental and emotional life of the author Rousseau is incorporated into this work.
