Vernacular poetry (English: Bái huà shī)

Japanese: 白話詩 - はくわし（英語表記）Bái huà shī

Baihua is a Chinese word that means plain language, and is colloquial speech as opposed to literary language, which is ornate. Chinese literature before the Republic of China was not recognized as authentic literature unless it used literary language. In particular, since poetry was primarily rhetoric, poetry other than literary language poetry, such as five-character, seven-character quatrains and regulated verse, was not considered literature. The baichua poetry discussed here refers to the early Republic of China poetry movement that sought to elevate baichua poetry, which was not consciously written as literature, to the level of literature.

白話とは中国語で，飾りのないことばという意味で，飾りのあることばであった文語に対する口語のことである。民国以前の中国の文学は，文語を使用しないかぎり正統な文学とは認められなかった。とくに詩は修辞を主とするために，五言七言の絶句や律詩といった文語詩以外の詩は，文学として扱われなかった。ここで説く白話詩とは，文学としては意識的に書かれなかった白話詩を，文学の域にまで高めようという民国初めの詩運動のことである。
