A deciduous tree of the Cornaceae family (APG classification: Cornaceae). It can reach a height of 10 meters. The trunk is gray-brown. The leaves are opposite, elliptical or oval, 4-12 cm long, entire. The flowers bloom in June-July, are small and pale yellow, and many of them are clustered together in a sphere, with four large petal-like white involucres. It is considered to be a more advanced plant than the same genus Cornus, which bears large corymbs without involucres. The fruits are spherical, 1-1.5 cm in diameter, ripen red, and are edible. It commonly grows in mountainous areas, distributed from Honshu to Kyushu, the Korean peninsula, and China. The name comes from the fact that the capitulum resembles the head of a warrior monk, and the white involucres resemble a hood. Because the fruits are edible, it is also called Yamaguwa, meaning mulberry that grows in the mountains, but it is a completely different species from the Yamaguwa of the same name, which is a member of the Mulberry family. The material is used as equipment material. [Yuichi Kadota March 22, 2021] [Reference item] |The flowering season is from June to July.
