A medieval samurai family whose main territory was Oyamada Manor in Tama County, Musashi Province. Descended from the Kanmu Taira clan and the Chichibu clan, Ariyoshi became the manor official of Oyamada Manor and was called Oyamada betto. Ariyoshi was in Kyoto when Minamoto no Yoritomo raised his army in 1180 (Jisho 4), so he followed the Taira clan and joined the army to pursue Kiso Yoshinaka. However, when the Taira clan fled to the west, he was pardoned and went east, becoming a vassal of the Kamakura shogunate after his sons Inage Shigenari and Hasutani Shigetomo. The family was entrenched in the southwestern part of Musashi Province, but after the death of Yoritomo, the Hojo clan, who were trying to control Musashi Province, first killed their relatives, the Hatakeyama clan, in 1205 (Genkyu 2), and then assassinated Inage Shigenari and Hasutani Shigetomo, causing the family's influence to decline drastically.
