Japanese: 天目 - てんもく

Tenmoku tea bowl. The name was derived from a tea bowl brought back by a monk who studied at Mount Tenmoku in Zhejiang Province, China during the Kamakura period. The tea bowl has a narrow rim, a funnel-shaped body, and a small foot, and is covered in black glaze except for the bottom and foot. The representative is the one from Jian kiln, and is also called Jianzhan. Other well-known Chinese varieties include the Bessan and Taihisan from Jizhou kilns, and the Henan Tenmoku from northern China. In Japan, Seto Tenmoku, which imitates Jianzhan, was actively fired from the 14th century onwards to meet domestic demand. It is classified into several types, such as Yohen Tenmoku and Yuteki Tenmoku, based on the glaze tone and pattern. Today, the term is used in a broad sense to refer to all pottery with a black glaze.

天目茶碗。鎌倉時代に中国，浙江省の天目山に留学した僧が持ち帰った茶碗から生れた名称。口縁部がくびれ，胴部が漏斗(ろうと)状にすぼまり，小さめの高台がつく姿の茶碗で，胴裾と高台部を除き黒色の釉がかかっている。建窯のものが代表的で建盞(けんさん)ともいう。中国では，ほかに吉州窯産の〈鼈盞(べっさん)〉〈玳玻盞(たいひさん)〉，華北で産した〈河南天目〉などが知られる。また日本でも建盞を模倣した〈瀬戸天目〉が，国内の需要に応じて14世紀以降，さかんに焼成された。釉調や文様で曜変天目・油滴天目など数種に分類される。今日，広義には黒釉のかかったやきもの全般をさす語にもなっている。
