Solvolysis using alcohols. This is a reaction in which halides, acid chlorides, epoxides, esters, etc. react with alcohol and are substituted by an alkoxy group. It may be carried out using an acidic catalyst or in the presence of a highly nucleophilic alkoxide. When methanol is used, it is also called methanolysis, and when ethanol is used, it is also called ethanolysis.
