...A terrestrial orchid of the Orchidaceae family found in the grasslands of low mountains in Japan. It has a strong fragrance. The rhizome and tuberous roots are not very thick and run horizontally. The stem is somewhat tall for this genus, 35-60 cm. There are 5-7 leaves arranged alternately. The lower 4-6 leaves are almost the same size, elliptical, and 10-16 cm long. In May and June, it produces 10 or so milky white flowers that are somewhat densely packed. The flowers are about 1.5 cm in diameter. The dorsal sepals and petals are helmet-shaped. The lateral sepals open backwards and the lip petals hang down. There is a relatively long spur, 3-4 cm long. It is distributed throughout Japan from Hokkaido to Kyushu, as well as in China and Nepal. ...
