A snail shell of the family Snailidae. Four species are native to Japan. The Ootanishi (6.5cm tall) lives in rivers and lakes from southern Hokkaido to Kyushu, the Marutanishi (6cm) inhabits lakes and rice paddies from Hokkaido to Kyushu, Ishigaki Island, and the Korean Peninsula, and the Himetanishi (3.5cm) inhabits ponds from Honshu to Kyushu. The Nagatanishi (5cm) is endemic to the Lake Biwa water system. All have grey-black bodies and brown opercula. They are ovoviviparous, laying young shells in the summer and hibernating in the mud in the winter. The opercula fits snugly around the shell opening, so it can withstand drying out. They are edible. The Himetanishi is used as animal feed. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
