Fuji - Fuji

Japanese: クサフジ - くさふじ
Fuji - Fuji

A perennial herb of the legume family (APG classification: Fabaceae). The stem is vine-like and 1.5 meters long. The leaves have 18-24 leaflets, and the tips branch into tendrils that wrap around other plants. The leaflets are narrowly ovate and 1-3 cm long. From May to September, long racemes in the leaf axils produce dense, slightly lopsided, blue-purple, butterfly-shaped flowers that are about 1 cm long. The calyx is rather small, and the sepals are unequal in length and shorter than the calyx tube. The legumes contain 2-6 seeds, are oblong, 2-3 cm long, and have short pedicels. They grow in grasslands and forest edges in the mountains and fields of Hokkaido, Honshu, and Kyushu, and are widely distributed from the temperate to subarctic zones of the Northern Hemisphere.
