Hungarian novelist. Born in a rural area, he studied theology and law before becoming a newspaper reporter. His short story "Seven Kreuzers" (1908) made him a literary sensation, and he transformed from naturalism into realism with long rural-themed novels such as "Muddy Gold" (1911) and "Behind God" (1911). In all of his works, such as "Uri Muri" (1928), which depicts the life of the middle class trapped by convention, and "Happy People" (1935), which tells of the impoverished lives of peasants, we can sense the author's warm eye, which does not alienate people. He is said to be the father of modern Hungarian prose literature and the founder of Hungarian realism. His other works include the historical novel "Transylvania" trilogy (1922-35) and the autobiographical children's book "Be Good Till Death" (1921).
