A town in the Khabarovsk Krai in the eastern part of the Russian Federation. A fishing port on the northwest coast of the Sea of Okhotsk. Population: about 10,000. There is a fishing complex and a ship repair factory. It is one of the oldest Russian colonies in the Far East, and a winter camp was established there in 1647, and the Kosoy Stockade (fort) was built there in 1649. Until the mid-19th century, it was a major port on the Pacific coast of Russia, and served as a base for expeditions to Kamchatka, the Kuril Islands, Japan, Alaska, and other places.
