Monk Kojima - Kojima Hoshi

Year of birth: Year of birth unknown. Article 3 of May 2007 in the Toin Kojo Koki (included in the Shoshiryo Taisei) reads, "It has been said that between the 28th and 29th of last year, the monk Kojima passed away. This is the author of the Taiheiki, which has been read all over the world recently. Although he was of lowly craftsmanship, he is said to have been a master craftsman. It is a great pity" (originally in Chinese). This has led to him being noted as a person deeply involved in the creation of the Taiheiki. However, his true identity is divided on whether "Kojima" is a place name or not, and on how to view his relationship with Gen'ei and Keichin. There are theories that he was a low-ranking monk belonging to Enryaku-ji Temple, a mountain ascetic in Kojima, Bizen Province, or a storyteller (sekkyo) monk who stayed with Keichin. <References> Suzuki Tomie, Hasegawa Hajime, "Taiheiki" (Appreciation of Japanese Classics, Volume 13)

『洞院公定公記』(『続史料大成』所収)応安7.5.3条の「伝え聞く,去る廿八九日の間,小島法師円寂すと云々。是れ近日天下に翫ぶ太平記の作者なり。凡そ卑賤の器たりと雖も,名匠の聞え有り。無念と謂うべし」(原漢文)という記事により,『太平記』成立に深くかかわる人物として注目される。しかしその実像は「小島」を地名ととるかどうか,玄恵,恵鎮との関係をどうみるか,で分かれ,延暦寺に属する下級の僧,備前国児島の山伏,恵鎮のもとにいた物語(説経)僧,などの説がある。<参考文献>鈴木登美恵,長谷川端『太平記』(鑑賞日本の古典13巻)
