A city in central Kanagawa Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1971. It occupies the lowlands and plateau in the eastern part of the midstream of the Sagami River, with Atsugi city on the opposite bank. It was originally an agricultural town, but since the early Showa period, it has been a transfer point for the Sagami Line, the Odakyu Electric Railway Line, and the Sagami Railway Line, and in recent years has seen rapid residential development, making it a satellite city of the Keihin Expressway. Horticultural agriculture, including the cultivation of vegetables and flowers (persimmons), is thriving. The remains of Sagami Province Kokubunji Temple (historic site) can be found on the plateau.
