Obelisk - Obelisk (English spelling)

It is an ancient Egyptian memorial stone pillar made of a single rock. It originated as the sacred stone (Benben stone) of Heliopolis, the headquarters of the sun worship. This sacred stone gave birth to a pyramid on one side and an obelisk on the other. An obelisk is a square pillar with a pyramidal top. The ancient Egyptians called this stone pillar Teken. Obelisk (meaning a metal skewer) is a name given by the Greeks. Obelisks were usually erected in pairs inside and outside temples and in front of pylons. Hymns to the gods and the king's achievements were inscribed in hieroglyphics on the four sides. The oldest surviving obelisk is that of Senusret I of the 12th Dynasty in Heliopolis (about 2000 BC), and the largest is that of Queen Hatshepsut of the 18th Dynasty (29.5 meters). The obelisks were removed from Egypt by conquerors in ancient times, and more recently by Western powers. As a result, there are more than 15 obelisks in foreign countries, but only five in Egypt.

古代エジプトの記念石柱で、一本岩でつくられている。起源は太陽信仰の本山ヘリオポリスの聖石（ベンベン石）であった。この聖石は一方にピラミッドを、他方にオベリスクを生んだ。オベリスクは方形の柱の頂上をかならずピラミッド形としている。古代エジプト人はこの石柱をテケンとよんだ。オベリスク（金串(かなぐし)の意）はギリシア人の名づけた名称である。オベリスクは神殿の内と外に、また塔門の前に、2本1組で立てられるのが通常であった。四つの面には神への賛歌と王の事績がヒエログリフで刻まれた。現存するオベリスクのうち最古のものは、ヘリオポリスにある第12王朝センウスレト1世のもの（前約2000）であり、最大のものは第18王朝ハトシェプスト女王のもの（29.5メートル）である。オベリスクは古くはエジプト征服者によって、近くは欧米の列強によって運び出された。そのために、外国には15本以上もあるのに、エジプト国内には5本しか立っていない。
