[Born] Eikyo 6 (1434) Died: September 30, 1497. Military commander during the Koga-Muromachi period. Koga kubō (1455-97). Son of Kamakura kubō Mochiuji. Childhood name: Eijuō. When Mochiuji was defeated in the Eikyo Rebellion in February 1439 and committed suicide in Kamakura, he was protected by the monk Shōzai of Zuisen-ji Temple, and later sought refuge with Oi Mochimitsu in Shinano. In March of the following year, he participated in the uprising of his elder brothers Haruo and Yasuo in Yūki, Shimōsa, but the following month the castle fell, and Haruo and Yasuo were killed in Mino. Nariuji was pardoned and lived in Kyoto, but in 1449, Uesugi Fusada, through the advice of the generals of the Kanto region, applied to the Muromachi bakufu to make him Kamakura kubō, so he went east and entered Kamakura in September. He then came of age in November. In February of the same year, he became the commander of the Left Guard, Junior Fourth Rank. Shigeuji hated Uesugi Norizane and Noritada, the father and son who had defeated and killed his father, Mochiuji. Although he once made peace with them by obeying the Shogunate's orders, in December of the third year of the Kyotoku era (54), he attacked and killed Noritada at his mansion in Kamakura. The Shogunate immediately ordered the pursuit of Shigeuji, and the Kanto region was thrown into great turmoil centered on the conflict between Shigeuji and the Uesugi clan. In January of the first year of the Kosho era (55), Shigeuji marched to Musashino Bubaigawara and defeated Noritada's younger brother, Fusaaki, who had succeeded Noritada as Uesugi clan leader. After that, he attacked the Uesugi generals one after another. However, in June, Kamakura was taken by the army of Imagawa Noritada, the Suruga Shugo, who had been ordered by the Shogunate, and Shigeuji took control of Koga Castle in Shimousa in the first year of the Choroku era (57), and made it his base. The Shogunate also sent Shogun Yoshimasa's younger brother Masatomo to Horikoshi in Izu in an attempt to pacify the Kanto region. It is from this that Masatomo is referred to as the Horikoshi kubō and Shigeuji as the Koga kubō. From this point on, the battle situation remained undecided, and in 1577 a battle broke out between Fusaaki's successor, Akisada, and his vassal, Nagao Kageharu, causing further turmoil in the Kanto region. As a result, both the Shigeuji and the Uesugi clans gradually lost power, and in 1587 Shigeuji made peace with Akisada. Then, in 1591 Shigeuji made peace with the shogunate and Masatomo.
