Located in the center of Paris, this is France's premier opera and ballet theater. It originated from the Royal Academy of Music and Dance founded by Louis XIV in 1669 (it began operations in 1671). It is a large theater with a proud tradition that is as famous as the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Vienna State Opera, and the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, but while the former two are famous as opera houses, the Opera and the Bolshoi are more famous for their ballet. The original building has been lost, and the current building was designed by C. Garnier and built over a period of 14 years, and opened in 1875. It is one of the largest Italian horseshoe-shaped stages. The ceiling painting of the auditorium was painted by Chagall in 1964 at the suggestion of Malraux, the Minister of Culture at the time. It also has a museum and library. パリ中心部にあるフランス第一のオペラ，バレエ劇場。1669年ルイ14世によって創設された王立音楽舞踊アカデミーが起源（1671年活動開始）。ミラノのスカラ座，ウィーン国立歌劇場，モスクワのボリショイ劇場などと並び称される伝統を誇る大劇場だが，前２者がオペラの殿堂として有名なのに対し，オペラ座とボリショイはむしろバレエのほうでその名をとどろかせている。当初の建物は失われ，現在の建物はC.ガルニエの設計により14年の歳月をかけて建築，1875年開場した壮麗なもの。イタリア式馬蹄型の舞台としては最大のものの一つ。客席の天井画は1964年，当時の文化大臣マルローの発案でシャガールが描いた。博物館・図書館を付設。1989年にはフランス革命ゆかりの地バスティーユに第二のオペラ劇場〈オペラ・バスティーユ〉が誕生し，従来の建物〈パレ・ガルニエ〉と両方の劇場で公演が催される。→ヌレーエフ／リファール
