French composer. He was good at composing from an early age, and after studying business in London, he devoted himself to the study of music. He studied under Cherubini and achieved success with the Opéra-Comique (opera). In 1823, he teamed up with librettist A.E. Scribe (1791-1861), whose works became popular at the Opéra and the Opéra-Comique. He succeeded Cherubini as director of the Paris Conservatoire from 1842 to 1870. He composed many operas, including La Mute d'Portici (also known as Masaniello) (1828), which marked the beginning of French grand opera, and the Opéra-Comique Fra Diavolo (1830), but except for the latter, these are rarely performed today.

フランスの作曲家。幼時より作曲をよくし，ロンドンで商業を学んだのち音楽の勉強に専念。ケルビーニに師事し，オペラ・コミック（オペラ）で成功。1823年からは台本作者A.E.スクリーブ〔1791-1861〕と組み，その作品は当時オペラ座とオペラ・コミック座の人気演目となった。1842年−1870年，ケルビーニを継いでパリ音楽院（コンセルバトアール）院長。フランスのグランド・オペラの幕開けを告げた《ポルティチの唖娘（別名マサニエロ）》（1828年），オペラ・コミック《フラ・ディアボロ》（1830年）など数多くのオペラ作品があるが，後者を除き今日上演の機会はほとんどない。
